biography
Pioneering concert artist, educator, and Liszt Laureate, Dr. Martin Leung—internationally recognized as Video Game Pianist™—has redefined the boundaries of the modern recital stage for over two decades. The first pianist to gain international recognition for playing video game music on the piano (Cleveland.com), Leung created a global movement during the pre-YouTube Web 1.0 era by elevating interactive media scores through the rigor of classical conservatory technique.
Holding a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Southern California (studying under Dr. Stewart Gordon), a Master of Music from the Yale School of Music (under Claude Frank), and a Bachelor of Music with academic honors from the Cleveland Institute of Music (under Paul Schenly and Daniel Shapiro), Leung combines world-class academic pedigree with an unprecedented cultural legacy.
Historical Impact & The Web 1.0 Genesis Leung’s artistic impact began in 2004 when, at age 17, his viral performance of the Super Mario Medley—executed blindfolded—premiered on digital platforms including eBaum’s World and gprime.net, eventually amassing over 45 million views. At a time when video game music was experienced primarily through passive digital playback, Leung injected a transformative human element, proving that game scores possessed the structural and expressive depth to captivate traditional concert audiences.
His foundational contribution to digital music culture continues to reverberate across major media:
Film & Television: Referenced in the piano duet scene of The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) and featured on Japan’s TBS network broadcast Kamiwaza (2023).
Documentary Recognition: Highlighted in YouTube’s official documentary Celebrating the Mario Community + 100 BILLION Views (2023).
Cultural Phenomenon: Subject of DailyMotion’s (Paris) international 2011 artist search competition, “Qui sera le futur Martin Leung?”
Following his early viral recognition, Leung made historic debuts across major industry touchpoints, performing 21 requested encores at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, Texas. At the 2007 Game Audio Network Guild Awards at GDC, he delivered a congratulatory speech and performance honoring Koji Kondo in the presence of both Kondo and Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
The Concert Stage, Orchestral Engagements & Digital Presence Leung has performed for an estimated 100,000 people across 17 countries and 5 continents. He has graced venerated concert halls including Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and Royal Festival Hall. A frequent featured soloist, he performed Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Leipzig Academic Orchestra at the Gewandhaus and with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, alongside appearances with the Pittsburgh Symphony and the USC Thornton Symphony.
He is a veteran of premier entertainment industry events, performing at E3, PAX West, PAX East, RazerCon, BlizzCon, Brasil Game Show, and German Games Convention. As a featured soloist with the international Video Games Live touring series (2005–2012), he played a crucial role in the global popularization of orchestral game music.
A modern digital broadcaster, Leung is a YouTube Partner (103K subscribers) whose channel was professionally managed by Fullscreen, Inc. from 2014 to 2021. Expanding his digital footprint as a Twitch Partner (15K followers), he gained unique recognition during the global chess boom for streaming simultaneous high-level chess and piano performances—innovative broadcasts that drew direct engagement from top chess grandmasters including Hikaru Nakamura, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and Alireza Firouzja.
